Lions Lead the Way in Injury Prevention

The Kingborough Lions United Football Club are leading the way in injury prevention in Tasmanian football (soccer). The club recently hosted Rob Aitken from Sports Medicine Australia to conduct the two-day Level 1 Sports Trainer course at their club rooms in Kingston. The course covers the prevention and management of injuries in sport as well as sports nutrition, drugs in sport and taping techniques.

The course was attended by club staff members and volunteers, with the club subsidising part of the course fee as part of their plan in increase the number of qualified Sports Trainers available as well to support their volunteers, without whom the cub wouldn’t be able to operate. The Lions are the only club in Tasmania who require all teams from the Youth age group and above to have a qualified first aider present at all games and they are in the process of increasing this to be a qualified Level 1 Sport Trainer, the first club in the state to do so.

Lucy Michaels, Sports Trainer for the Kingborough Lions Senior Men is pleased that the club is taking this initiative. “It is already mandatory to have Sports Trainers present at all state level AFL and NRL games so it just makes sense that football adopts the same policy,” she says. “The Lions are aiming to do this not just for the senior teams but for all teams right down to the juniors which shows great future planning.”

Football Federation Tasmania (FFT), the governing body for football in the state are also recognising the importance of having qualified Sports Trainers at both training sessions and games to ensure that injured players are managed correctly. FFT also partially funded the cost of the course to encourage participation. “There is a real shortage of qualified Sports Trainers in Tasmania at the moment and it won’t be long before demand outstrips supply,” said Michaels.

The Kingborough Lions will be holding trials for their Youth Academy over the next few weeks, with a focus on injury prevention and management being introduced into the program. Visit for more information.
